World Cup Season Begins

The Giant Factory Off-Road Team traveled more than 35 hours non-stop from the Sea Otter Classic in California to the World Cup opener in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. After such great results the previous weekend, the team was primed to get the World Cup season underway. Despite the long journey, we made it to South Africa with just a few late-arriving bags, and the team was met by the local Giant distributor and shop owner, now known as "The Gregs". The days leading up to qualifying were spent with the guys getting up to speed on the track and learning their fastest lines. In the qualifying round Duncan Riffle and Andrew Neethling were 9th and 10th respectively. The Giant Factory Off-Road Team was the only one to have two riders qualify inside the top ten. On to the finals....

Come race day, the pit area was buzzing. Local fans were excited to see recently crowned South African National Champion Andrew Neethling as he prepared for his finals run. Media and film crews were on hand to film and photograph the team-partly because of Andrew's local esteem and partly because of the team's impressive qualifying results. (Make sure to scan the internet for all the film footage!) Duncan was the team's highest finisher in the final, knocking nearly 10 seconds off his qualifying time to finish 14th, just 2.213 seconds off the podium and .741 seconds away from a top-10 finish. Andrew, coming off of a second place at Sea Otter, had two crashes in his final run and finished 60th. Danny, who was off the radar from not having a full pace run in qualifying, rode strongly into 22nd place. The team remains hungry for round two of the World Cup, which will be held in Ft. William, Scotland, June 4-5.
